Last week Earth Team interns came together to conduct their first of many school wide waste audits. Interns sorted through 8 of Oakland High’s trash bags, from various locations throughout campus, and collected data via 4 platforms.
A data collection team collected weight, volume and frequency of the trash being sorted. An observation team took pictures and notes documenting quotes as well as all the feels of a waste audit.
Majority of interns were surprised by their initial findings. Before the audit, interns took a guess at how much of each category would be present in the landfill, most guesses averaged around 50-70% being landfill. After they sorted and collected data they concluded that 79% alone had the potential to be composted!
Interns want to specifically educate the student body about the 4 R’s; reduce, reuse, recycle and rot. We will be focusing our energy on bringing food waste issues to light and sharing this data with faculty, staff and peers as a way to encourage better waste disposal practices.
