This past week, interns welcomed their first Guest Speaker of the year, as well as, got some training on the 3-Bin system that they will be helping implement this Fall at Oakland High. Interns participated in a hands-on learning activity teaching them how to properly separate into a 3-Bin system, they were also given some time to discuss together the importance of; Source Reduction, Composting, Recycling, and Landfill.
Nancy Demming, Sustainability Manager for Oakland Unified School District, gave great insight into why our schools need to take more steps forward to better their waste management strategies. Interns got the chance to learn about some of the different challenges and issues that can occur with trying to implement the 3-Bin system at a big school like Oakland High, and how they can utilize their resources to find solutions to these obstacles. Overall, it was a great discussion, but even better was when Nancy gave the students an opportunity to give their personal recommendations to the sorting signage that will be at multiple Oakland schools!
To finish off a day well spent, students sat down together to research and design an interactive game for the BAY DAY: Point Pinole Shoreline Festival. Check out our next post to see how it went!
