“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together. And great things are not something accidental, but must certainly be willed.” – Vincent van Gogh
Our first day of the Trash Can Mosaic project was a success! After successfully applying to the City of Oakland’s Adopt-A-Spot program, we have succeeded in adopting 3 trash cans around our school. Our mission is simple: use art to help people litter less. Our first day putting our plan into action was Wednesday, March 16th at our meeting and we were successful in getting the ball rolling on this project.
With the help of Doug Streblow from EarthTeam, we got to learn how to mix the mortar to put on our first trash can. We couldn’t do this work without all the help from the City of Oakland’s Adopt-A-Spot! They came to visit our internship to drop off supplies for us to use.
Day one of the mosaic project resulted in a smooth surface with our carved out art plan on the trash can. Our next step will be to begin bringing our artwork to life with tile and mortar during our next meeting.
We hope to have a second art piece submitted as early as next week so we can begin moving on to the rest of the trash cans we adopted for the project. Just as we did on this day, we will continue to do litter assessments around our trash can to measure if our work is really making a difference for the community.
Stay tuned for more updates on this project!
